What is a Wealth Transfer Strategy?
Wealth Transfer strategy refers to the planning and implementation of passing on wealth from one generation (or beneficiary) to the next. These strategies aim to minimize taxes, preserve wealth, and ensure that the benefactor’s wishes are honored.
In Canada, there is no inheritance tax, meaning after your outstanding debts are paid off, you are able to pass on your wealth to your beneficiaries. You are only subject to tax on your income before death.
Here are some different ways wealth transfer can look like:
Lifetime Giving
Transferring assets during your lifetime to reduce the size of your estate and potentially avoid probate fees.
Asset Protection
Establishing legal structures such as trusts to protect assets from creditors and potential claims.
慈善捐赠
Utilizing strategies such as donating appreciated securities or establishing donor-advised funds to achieve philanthropic goals and receive tax credits.
Business Succession Planning
Planning for the smooth transfer of a family business, including restructuring, setting up family trusts, or using an estate freeze to manage tax implications.
Tax Planning
Implementing strategies to minimize income tax, capital gains tax, and probate fees, by leveraging tax-deferred accounts like RRSPs and TFSAs.
Insurance Planning
Using life insurance to provide liquidity for estate taxes, equalize inheritances, or fund business buy-sell agreements.
